About Us

Virginia Speed, Inc.

Virginia Speed, Inc. was founded in 2002 and has become a leader in high-performance engineering. We are a family-owned and operated speed shop specializing in engine builds, engine design, dynamometer testing, software tuning, after-market installations, custom fabrication, machining, prototyping, and manufacturing. Our expertise with the LS/LT1-4 engine systems has made us recognized nationally in publications like Super Chevy and LSX TV. Our team includes experienced mechanical engineers, drag racers, fabricators, and highly skilled technicians. The high-performance solutions we deliver stem from over 40  years of experience in engine research and development, engineering, product development, and racing experience.

Within its first 5 years, Virginia Speed expanded its primary location to a 20,000 sq. foot facility built to support an in-house machine shop, testing, and tuning division consisting of 3 dynamometers, and an expanded engineering division that supports both local business and military with prototyping and manufacturing. Our facility has become the hub of many great projects far beyond the organizations initial intentions.

About the Founder

Virginia Speed, Inc.’s founder Douglas Hahn has had a rewarding career that was founded with his aspiration in both engineering and racing. Douglas, like the rest of our team, thrives on high-performance engineering and problem-solving. He began developing his mechanical engineering expertise when he joined the Air Force after high school. Soon after his military career, he got his first big break in the mid-’80s while working as a mechanic in Charlotte, NC when he worked on a Porsche brought in by NASCAR racer Mark Martin. Mark appreciated the work so much that he hired Douglas to be his crew chief in the Sportsman division. Douglas worked the NASCAR circuit and earned a college degree in mechanical engineering during his free time from the Florida Institute of Technology.

Douglas then became president of Seatek’s American division and had the privilege of working with the legendary Italian boat designer, Fabio Buzzi. Douglas worked with Fabio and the world champion boat racer Daniel Scioli (previously Vice President of Argentina and currently mayor of Buenos Aires) as crew chief for the highly successful offshore boat racing team La Gran Argentina. In the mid-’90s, he was the lead engineer for world record-holding speedboats for furniture manufacturer and boat driver Mark Nemschoff. Hahn and Nemschoff not only broke speed and endurance records but raced the APBA A-Class Super-V and Super Cat classes winning both national and world championships. In the late 1990’s, Hahn served as vice president of engineering for Fountain Power Boats. He spent 4 years as Director of Engine and Reliability Engineering for Volvo Penta, a Chesapeake, VA-based division of the Swedish company specializing in boat engines. Douglas started his dream by opening Virginia Speed in 2002, and the rest is history.
